There are several different versions of Kingdom Hearts III to chose from when considering your preorder needs. Kingdom Hearts 3 launches tonight at midnight if you're on the East coast, and 9 if you're on the west. After what seems like an eternity, the release date for Kingdom Hearts III is nearly upon us. On March 30, 2021, the Kingdom Hearts series finally made its way to PC (officially) through the Epic Games Store. If you buy something through this post, IGN may get a share of the sale. EGS exclusives tend to be one year, so there was a lot of speculation that the games would be available on other storefronts (realistically just Steam) in a year's time, consistent with other timed exclusive releases on the platform.Īt the time of writing this thread, we're months past the year anniversary of the EGS release, and the games remain exclusive to EGS. The Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary came and went with no word on a wider PC release of the series. I also wonder if FFVIIR and Stranger of Paradise will follow a similar trend in remaining on EGS for an extended period of time or never being sold on other storefronts at all.Īt this point I start to wonder if whatever deal Epic and Square has goes beyond a 1 year exclusivity deal, as it would seem strange to me to otherwise limit their games to one storefront if they aren't obligated to do so. I have no idea what the pattern is, I guess their more anime-esque games are what Epic is willing to pay for? Do you think that there's a well crafted strategy here that we're just not privy to and Square is calculating all this, or are they just phoning it in?Īt the same time, Forspoken seems like a pretty big deal and is seeing release on multiple storefronts, so Square obviously sees the value in reaching as wide of an audience as it can. This is a theory so bear with me but I'd look at how they plan to release Forspoken and XVI as an indicator on how Square is gonna go with future titles.Īs of right now, the Square games on PC that is exclusive to EGS is likely due to the fact that KH3 and VII Remake are made on Unreal which is an Epic engine and that agreement to use their engine for titles maybe the reason why those two games are locked to EGS. XVI and Forspoken are (as far as I'm aware) built on in-house engines with XVI and Forspoken likely running on a modified version of Luminous so if they are tied to EGS then yeah almost all PC games from Square will be locked to EGS at least at launch. If XVI and Forspoken releases on Steam then it will likely be on a case by case basis based on what engine the game is being made on.ĮDIT: before you quote me, yeah it's still a theory that I had in my head to process this shit so it might not be accurate but all I'll say is that in the end, Square is out here trying to make money and if an EGS cut feels worth it to them then they'll do it.There are several different versions of Kingdom Hearts III to chose from when considering your preorder needs.
